Tooth Extraction
What is a Tooth Extraction?
Extractions involve completely removing a tooth from the mouth. We try our hardest to preserve healthy teeth as much as possible. Unfortunately, there may come a time when there is no saving a tooth and it’ll have to be removed. Likewise, a tooth may be posing a problem to your oral health and could become an issue in the future. We perform extractions in a comfortable and relaxed setting.
Why is a Tooth Extraction needed?
An extraction is often needed when there is no other way to save a tooth. If you have a problematic tooth, we’ll recommend removing it to prevent future issues from developing. Some reasons for needing an extraction include:
- A tooth is severely decayed or loose
- A tooth has cracked or fractured below the gum line
- A tooth is impacted and unable to come in on its own (wisdom teeth)
- Your child has a stubborn baby tooth that is hindering the permanent teeth from coming into place
- You want to avoid the expense and time of other procedures to save a tooth
Who is a candidate for a Tooth Extraction?
Dr. Letran will examine your teeth to determine if one or more of them needs to be extracted. It’s not uncommon for needing to have extractions done before you can have a full denture placed. We can perform extractions on all patients and on any tooth within the mouth. Our goal is to provide you with this service in a comfortable and relaxed environment.
What happens during a Tooth Extraction?
The procedure begins with anesthetic to numb the area. We offer oral conscious sedation to help keep you relaxed during your appointment in the office. Dr. Letran will then use special tools to loosen and lift the tooth from the mouth. Sutures may be needed to close the gums. You’ll bite down on gauze to stop any bleeding and will be sent home. You will be provided with important aftercare instructions to help the area to heal properly. It’s common to experience some pain and swelling within the first few days.
