Periodontal Scaling and Root Planing

What is a Periodontal Scaling and Root Planing?

A scaling and root planing is sometimes referred to as a deeper cleaning. These cleanings are performed by registered dental hygienists who work to clean the teeth as well the small pockets around each tooth. When you have gum disease, the soft tissue will begin to separate from the teeth themselves. This causes pocketing to develop, which can lead to further infection of the gums.

Why would a Periodontal Scaling and Root Planing be needed?

These types of cleanings are often necessary if you have gum disease. If left untreated, gum disease can eventually cause the teeth to loosen and fall out. You may even experience bone loss because of the disease. By treating gum disease early on with a regular scaling and root planing, this helps to keep your teeth and gums healthy.

Who is a candidate for a Periodontal Scaling and Root Planing?

We can check your gums for any signs of disease. This is often done by probing the small pockets around each tooth. If a pocket is deeper than about 3mm, it may indicate that you have gum disease that is in need of treatment. It is best to treat the disease early on to prevent it from getting worse.

What can be expected during a Periodontal Scaling and Root Planing?

Dr. Letran will first administer local anesthetic to just one side of your mouth. The hygienist will then clean your teeth, removing tartar and stains. The pockets around each tooth are thoroughly cleaned and the roots smoothed to promote even and quick healing of the soft tissue. You will then be scheduled to come back in to have the other side of your mouth treated in the same way. In order to keep your teeth healthy and clean, we may suggest that you have multiple scaling and root planings as part of your periodontal treatment plan.
