Inlays and Onlays

Inlays and Onlays

What are Inlays and Onlays?

An inlay is a restoration that sits inside the cusps or grooves of a tooth. An onlay is a similar restoration, but it sits over the very top of the actual tooth. Inlays are useful for areas of deep decay or if a large filling needs to be replaced. Onlays can be used similarly, but they’re more suited for teeth that have chipped or have only slightly broken.

Why are Inlays and Onlays needed?

Inlays and onlays may be necessary if a tooth has a deep area of decay or a large area of filling material. If you’ve cracked, chipped or broken your tooth only slightly, either of these restorations can be helpful when it comes to improving the look of your smile. You can think of an inlay and onlay as a smaller dental crown. They’re ideal for when a full crown isn’t needed, but when a filling isn’t sufficient enough on its own.

Who is a candidate for Inlays and Onlays?

With the help of an exam, Dr. Letran will be able to determine if an inlay or onlay is needed. These restorations are often placed over the back teeth, but they can be customized for each patient’s individual needs. You may want either of these restorations because you’re looking for a durable and long-term solution to your smile problems. It’s not uncommon for inlays and onlays to last for decades without needing special care.

What happens during the procedure for Inlays and Onlays?

The procedure will begin by removing any decay or old filling material. We then take impressions and use these molds to create the new inlay or onlay for you. You will come in for a second appointment. This visit involves placing the restoration and smoothing out any rough edges that could affect your bite. You will then be able to leave the office feeling confident in your new smile. Most inlays and onlays can last for years and even decades without needing any type of maintenance.
