Dental Implants
What are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are often made of titanium and are used to replace teeth within the mouth. They work independently, which means that they do not require any surrounding teeth to be compromised. Implants are inserted deep into the bone of the jaw and given time to heal. Over the course of a few months, dental implants will actually fuse with the bone, becoming an essential and permanent part of your smile.
Why are Dental Implants needed?
The most common reason for needing or even wanting an implant is because you’re missing a tooth. However, despite the fact that implants are most often used to replace single teeth, they can be used to hold bridge work and even complete dentures. Implants act as an abutment for other dental restorations, like crowns, bridges and prosthetic appliances. With the help of implant technology, you’ll find it easier to chew, eat and smile with confidence.
Who is a candidate for Dental Implants?
In order for dental implants to heal correctly, there has to be enough healthy bone structure in the area they’re going to be placed. If you’re suffering from bone loss, we may recommend having a bone grafting done prior to implant surgery. Most patients who are interested in implants and want them can safely have the surgery performed. Implants can last for decades without showing signs of wear or damage.
What happens during the Dental Implant procedure?
The procedure begins with either anesthetic or sedation as discussed during your consultation appointment. An incision is made through the gums and the titanium implant is placed deep into the bone. You will be given aftercare instructions and will need to come back for regular checkup appointments. Your implant should heal in about six months. Once it’s fully stable, we will make a new restoration for the implant and place it at a subsequent appointment.
