Dental Crowns
What are Dental Crowns?
A dental crown is a restoration that helps to cover a damaged or otherwise compromised tooth. If a tooth has broken, cracked, fractured or has a large area of filling or decay, a crown can be used to essentially cover the tooth. This not only helps to protect the tooth from further damage, but it improves the way that your smile looks. Crowns are realistic-looking and can last for years with no special care or maintenance.
Why are Dental Crowns needed?
A crown may be needed to either protect or cover a damaged tooth. The procedure is quick and easy, and the crown can be placed on virtually any tooth within the mouth. Some reasons you’d need a crown include:
- A tooth has cracked, broken or fractured
- A tooth just had a root canal performed on it
- A tooth has a large filling or area of decay
- An older crown needs to be replaced
Who is a candidate for Dental Crowns?
Dr. Letran can examine your teeth to determine if a crown is necessary. Oftentimes, a tooth that has had to be root canaled will need a crown, since it’s more susceptible to breaking. Likewise, older crowns showing signs of wear should be replaced as soon as possible. Most patients who need a crown can safely have the procedure done at their own convenience.
What happens during the Dental Crown procedure?
The procedure begins with local anesthetic used to numb the area. The damaged tooth is filed down to create a small seat or abutment for the new crown. Impressions are taken to make the permanent crown itself. Your next appointment involves having the crown placed over the tooth. We will make any adjustments to the crown that are needed. You will then be able to leave the office feeling confident in your brand new smile. You can expect the crown to last for years or even decades without requiring special care or treatment.
